Homo Sapiens Playing Part 2: HOW to Add PLAY to your DAY

sit on a swing!

As promised in part one, here are some ideas for lightening our days, adding play and expressing a part of us so necessary to our wholeness.

READY?

Rediscovering Childhood Joys

To reconnect with play, it can be helpful to revisit activities that brought joy in childhood. Whether it was building sandcastles, cloud-gazing, singing out loud, or swinging high on swings, these activities can reignite a sense of wonder and joy. Don't be afraid to experiment and try something you haven't done in years; you might be surprised at how much happiness it brings.

Chores to Cheer

Intentionally seeking opportunities for play in everyday tasks can transform our mundane routines and uplift our mental well-being. For instance, if washing dishes feels like a chore, try blowing bubbles while you scrub. If you're tired of vacuuming, imagine the vacuum is your dance partner and tango your way through the room. Pulling weeds in the garden? Run through the sprinkler for a refreshing break. By bringing a playful attitude into our daily lives, we not only make tasks more enjoyable but also break free from the monotony that often weighs us down.

Breaking out of our usual ways of doing things is powerful for mental health. When we introduce play, we invite creativity, allowing new ideas and perspectives to surface. Playfulness also has the remarkable ability to shift our emotional state quickly, helping us move from stress or frustration to joy and lightheartedness. Moreover, play teaches us to seek joy and gratitude in the small moments, reinforcing habits that are fundamental for maintaining good mental health.

12 Creative Ways to Incorporate Play and Joy into Daily Life

Artistic Expression:

Why It Works: Engaging in creative arts like painting, drawing, or sculpting taps into your creative side and can provide a sense of accomplishment and relaxation.

Try a new medium, such as watercolors or clay, and see where your imagination takes you. Participate in community art classes to share your creations and get inspired by others.

Dance and Sing:

Why It Works: Dancing and singing are powerful tools for boosting your mood and releasing energy. Physical movement combined with the rhythm of music helps to elevate your heart rate, reduce stress, and release endorphins, which are natural mood enhancers. Singing, whether alone or with others, activates your vocal cords, encourages deep breathing, and can even improve lung capacity. For many, especially women, singing can also be incredibly freeing. In a world where our voices are not always fully expressed or heard, singing allows us to reclaim and explore the full range of our vocal power. It’s a liberating act that can help you become better acquainted with your voice, building confidence and emotional resilience.

Join a dance class, or simply dance around your living room to your favorite tunes. Add singing to the mix—belt out your favorite lyrics as you move. Don’t worry about perfecting your moves or hitting every note—just enjoy the rhythm, express yourself, and let your body and voice move freely.

Nature Exploration:

Why It Works: Being in nature has a calming effect and can bring immense joy and peace.

Go for a hike, explore a new park, or spend time gardening. Observe the beauty of plants and wildlife, and consider starting a small garden to nurture and watch grow.

Games and Puzzles:

Why It Works: Playing games and solving puzzles stimulates the brain and can be both intellectually and socially engaging.

Host a game night with friends or try out a new puzzle on your own. Look for escape rooms or trivia nights in your community to add a social element to your play.

Storytelling and Writing:

Why It Works: Writing stories or keeping a journal can be a therapeutic way to express your thoughts and creativity.

Example: Start a blog, write a short story, or simply journal about your day. Join a writing group or attend open-mic nights to share your work and gain new perspectives.

By embracing activities that bring us joy, focusing on the process rather than the end result, and allowing ourselves to be in the flow, we can lead richer, more fulfilling lives. As Dr. Gabor Maté's reflections remind us, it’s never too late to rediscover the joy of play. So go ahead, pick up that old hobby, try something new, and allow yourself to play.
